After reading the Blogging101 assignment today, I decided to incorporate WordPress’ Daily Prompt into my Motivational Monday post. I was considering the “pleased to meet you” prompt in terms of people that are part of our lives, whether that is for a passing second or a growing relationship over a number of years.
It’s plaintive to think that many people are prone to leaving their houses and closing themselves off from the world, rather than entering it – some choosing to shuffle from A-B with their head magnetised towards the path beneath them, others keeping their vision firmly locked on to their latest fruit-shaped electronic device, or blocking out all life around them with an orchestra of sounds playing through their headphones. How often do we really stop and look?
I feel that we could all gain something from being a little more personable and kinder to those around us. A simple greeting to the person next to you on the train could make their day, you might find that you have a lot in common with that girl in glasses who travels in the elevator alongside you every day, or that you simply feel good for acknowledging and embracing people, rather than disregarding them.
I would like to motivate you to pay a little more attention to the people that are moving around on this planet, just like you. The next time that you go out, why not say “hi” to 5 complete strangers?
To conclude, I’d like to share a poem that I have written to further reflect on this point…
The Machine
You have your camera filming people passing by
Capturing life in the blink of an eye
Two men in business suits
A woman with odd boots
A couple in love
A full feathered dove
An elderly pair tottering along
A busker with a guitar singing his song
A group of friends on their way to school
A guy in a leather jacket, thinking he’s cool
An old artist painting on the street
A clown with rollerblades on his feet
A child with a balloon
And the clock strikes noon
People meeting
And Eating
Shaking hands
And leaving
A group drinking at a coffee shop
A male engaged with his laptop
A man with a moustache reading his book
A single woman admiring his look
A boy on his phone
A girl walking alone
A collision of the two
Turns into an “I love you”
A nerd in thick-rimmed glasses
A longhaired Rastafarian passes
Smoking a cigarette
And walking his pet
A man in a wheelchair
A girl with bright pink hair
Three men with beards
An elderly lady with an accumulation of fears
A girl dressed up waiting for her date
A boy running past, knowing he’s late
A bird pecking at the crumbs on the floor
A security guard locking up a store door
Cars filling the streets
People occupying train seats
All life is out of sight
As day becomes night
The sky turns ink blue
And there’s no one left in the world but you.

A wonderful way to illustrate your point, I really enjoyed that. For some reason, the image of a rollerblading clown really makes me giddy 🙂

I love your poem. I’m currently socializing with my neighbor. It is nice to be nice to strangers and neighbors. Lovely post.

Thank you!!! I’m glad that you are doing that, no one should ever feel alone in this world, I guess that was the idea behind the poem too 🙂

Ah, saying hello to strangers… not my strongest feature. I do say hello or a quick nod to someone I pass by at work or a nod of thanks to a stranger that held the door for me but I have this fear if I say hello to say, someone in an elevator or in a bus, it would turn out to be a conversation and I am not quite good at that either. 🙂 Don’t get me wrong, I love talking to interesting people. It’s the small talk that I do not like. Thats why I tell my friends, I write better than I speak. Lovely poem!

I can understand that, I think that is the case for quite a lot of people too, which is why I thought it was worth writing about. The most interesting conversations might arise from these chance happenings, you just don’t know what you’re potentially missing. You are a great writer, so at least you’re sharing your words some place! 🙂
Thank you for the compliment.

*lightbulb moment here* On second thought, I am saying hello to strangers! I am saying hello to them HERE, in blogging-land and I am making beautiful conversations. Duh! 😛 I guess I should start doing that more in real life. 🙂 And thank you for the compliment too, much appreciated.

I’m not good at saying hello, so I try to smile. Sometimes the person I am speaking to starts the greeting. Small talk in an elevator can be awkward for me because I know this person might be getting off soon. Sadly, I’ve been in the elevator with people who have their heads down in their phones and ear plugs in, and no one acknowledges each other. I’m not much of a talker admittedly, but I wish people would at least acknowledge each other. A nod, a smile, something.

Exactly right! Even the smallest of gestures counts, a smile is your best accessory 🙂

I’m sharing this stellar post by the Girl in Glasses. It has a great message and a lovely poem as well. When you’re done reading it, put down your phone and actually talk to someone. You never know who’s life you could save with a friendly hello and smile.

A smile seems like such a small gesture; but it does carry much weight. If only this ideology would spread. Thank you for this post.

I really enjoyed reading your post, it’s so true that we should take more time to observe the world around us and to meet and get to know the people around us. Your post actually inspired me to respond to the prompt the way I did, because you gave a different and awesome perspective to this prompt.
